Pedestrian Hit Multiple Times

Some times negligence is the only excuse for a motorist to hit a pedestrian. There are only so many signs, signals, or alerts that can be provided before it becomes increasingly obvious that car drivers aren’t looking for pedestrians on or near the road. Our pedestrian accident attorneys at Dan Doyle Law Group want you to know that we are strong advocates for policy that protects our pedestrians. We understand that not everyone has access to a car or lives close to public transportation. We understand that sometimes people just want to walk. You shouldn’t have to wear extreme protective gear if you want to walk to the store and back. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that pedestrians need to be extra careful when walking the streets of Pennsylvania.

New Statistics

In the annual report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, statistics show that Pennsylvania is one of the top five states with an increase of pedestrian injuries in major intersections. From 2014-2016 the fatalities increased by more than 25% with a total of 481 fatalities. People are dying just because they are lawfully crossing the street. However, in the state overall pedestrian fatalities did decline from 2016-2017 between the months of January-June. The decrease may be due to the increased awareness of pedestrian rights by PennDOT. Over the past year, police have been extra sensitive to motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians while they are lawfully using crosswalks. The PennDOT are also providing informative videos and pamphlets to bring more awareness to drivers.

Unfortunately, despite all the rising efforts to show pedestrians some love, fatalities still exist. For example, near West Chester in West Goshen, a pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles resulting in her death. The incident occurred late in the evening and it was unclear where she was walking. However, regardless of the pedestrian’s circumstances, drivers must always be cautious of their surroundings. This person was not only hit once but by several drivers who did not stop. Not all pedestrians who are hit result in death. Here are some common injuries pedestrians sustain when they are hit by a motorist:

  • Broken limbs
  • Back injury causing temporary or permanent paralysis
  • Neck injury
  • Lacerations or road burn
  • Brain injuries resulting in permanent damage
  • Internal injuries due to the impact which can result in internal bleeding
  • Bone fractures and sprains
  • Pelvic injuries which can inhibit walking or other leg functions
  • Wrongful death which is due to the negligence of the motorist

If you or someone you love has been hit and injured by a motorist then you deserve to be compensated for the injuries you or your loved one sustained. When hit by a car, you can still be covered by the motorist car insurance. Your car insurance should also cover pedestrian accidents too.
