Our personal injury attorneys in Philadelphia,PA want to discuss a recent case that injured three workers in Northeast Philadelphia.

How did this incident occur?

We have learned that three people were injured when a 46-year-old construction worker was drilling underground and struck a powerline. According to police, the man was digging in the 3200 blocks of Ryan Avenue at around 9 a.m. on the morning of Sept. 5 when he struck the power line and was shocked. The power of the shock sent manholes flying out of the ground.

“The manholes popped up and the fire was coming up off the truck, and they said that the truck was electrified,” said Ashley Fillman, a witness to the incident.

The worker was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two other employees, a 20-year-old and a 23-year-old, were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The area around the site, including Lincoln High School and Austin Meehan Middle School, were placed on lockdown briefly after the incident.

Personal injuries happen in various ways

This incident injured three workers and could have injured more. It could have even injured non-worker civilians in the area. We are not sure exactly why this worker was drilling near a powerline. In most cases, such lines have to be clearly marked or turned off while work is being completed. Whether anyone was negligent in this case will certainly be investigated.

For cases like this, workers’ compensation is usually the first recourse for injured workers. However, if the incident was caused by the negligence of a third-party, the workers may be entitled to significant compensation.
